Davao City… My Second Home

Davao… the only place in the entire archipelago where fireworks are prohibited during Christmas, New Year or any occasion for that matter.  I celebrated one Christmas once in Davao and it was the most quiet celebration in my entire life.  Quiet but fun since you’ll have more time to talk and bond with family and friends.

You look so funny without your two front teeth!”

Whether they call these teasing or just plainly stating a fact, these are the sort of comments that can really shatter a child’s self-esteem.

I know because I am a living testament to that.

My siblings used to tease me endlessly of what they perceived to be my physical defects.  For a long time, I believe them.  I believe that I’m ugly thus I never really took time to take care of myself.  I can practically survive a whole day without combing my hair or looking at the mirror.  Well, I don’t want to look at the mirror anyway because I know I will not like what I’ll see.

An ugly duckling… that’s who I was.
